Career Change

The last day had a date. What comes next does not have to, and the plan can give you room to choose it.

Leaving one line of work for another, or for none. The financial break has a date and the psychological one does not.

How we work

What changes

Leaving a role sets three things in motion, and the first one moves fastest.

What you leave with

Unvested equity, stock options and deferred pay each follow their own rules. Options often have to be exercised within a short window after leaving, and §409A governs when deferred pay is paid out, most of it fixed when the pay was first deferred.

The gap

Income may stop before the next work starts. The household needs a bridge, and the health and disability cover that came with the job needs replacing before it ends.

What the next work is for

Some people want a larger role, some a smaller one, some none. The plan shows what each would cost, so the choice is made on purpose rather than by default.

What it strains, what it draws on

A change of work tends to strain confidence, income and the sense of choosing for yourself, and it draws on the people and the skills built over a career.

Strains: the parts of a life this Transition tends to draw down. Draws on: the parts it can strengthen, and that help carry it. Both come from the Human Wealth ontology.

How the ontology maps Transitions

Common questions

It depends on the kind of option, its price, the company’s prospects and the tax on exercising. We model the choices before your last day, while all of them are still open.

Start with a conversation.

You do not need a balance sheet or a date. Tell us what is changing, and we will tell you plainly whether we are the right office for it.
